Venice Summary

Many a time and oft, in the Rialto...

Thank you for taking this tour with me. I hope it has helped you decide if you would enjoy a trip to Venice - although you'd have to be mad not to want to visit this city. This is truly one of the top tourist destinations on the planet, and rightly so. The film stock used by the tourists here alone probably accounts for half of Kodak's output. It is certainly busy around St Mark's Square, but you don't have to wander far to escape the crowds. Don't worry about your children, they'll love it here - the Italians always make a big fuss of kids. The prices are not as high as you probably expect - it's certainly possible to eat cheaply in a back-street pizzeria and there are plenty of take-aways. If you catch a vaporetto to the Lido (about 15 mins) there are superrmarkets and grocery shops near the landing - this is also a cheaper option for accommodation. If money is tight, stay on the mainland (perhaps Mestre or Treviso) and come in by bus - Venice dies at night, so you're not missing much there, although walking the deserted alleys late at night (which not only is safe, but feels safe) and crossing silent canals may be one of the many memories of this unique city that stay with you for a long time.

UKDave's Venice rating
5 stars

"The highest rating - Venice is simply in a class of its own. In terms of history and classical art, it has few rivals. The views are impressive and the Italians deserve credit for sympathetic restoration. The weather isn't really that important, which is probably just as well. The Venetians are a cheerful, friendly and trustworthy bunch who accept tourism is their business, but don't let it rule all. English widely spoken. Crowds a problem only at the major sights. Good public transport by vaporetti and a joy to be free of motor traffic. Very little night-life. Not a cheap city, particularly for good accommodation, but you can do it on a careful budget. You can't call yourself a world-class tourist until you've been to Venice!"
