21. View from Campanile di San Marco

An even better view is to be had from the top of the campanile. The Island of St George is the backdrop for classic Venice shot number five (there's one left - can you guess it?). The trick is to take a photo of those gondolas you see parked up beneath, with the Island in the background! You can see the steady stream of tourists attempting this. (Don't worry, I wouldn't dare.) Despite the full 360-degree view from up here, you can't see any canals! Strange,huh? Just about visible on the horizon is the long, thin island of the Lido. Byron once swam from there, through the basin below us, up into the Grand Canal on our right and on to the Rialto Bridge, to win a bet. What a poet!
