25. Moriah Chapel, Broad Street

broad street chapel, blaenafon

A more fitting view of Blaenavon's main street to finish our tour. The magnificent Moriah Baptist Chapel has seen a few changes since it was built 120 years ago, and is destined to witness a few more during the next decade or so. Over three hundred years, Blaenafon has risen from a few farms on a blasted moor to a noisy, exciting metropolis of over 25,000 inhabitants - and then fallen back to the soporific, forlorn dormitory town it is now. But the spirit of Blaenavon lives on in its peolple, a remarkable bunch of souls, once met never forgotten (no matter how hard I try). So many superlatives have already been achieved in mining, iron and steel production, education, (not to mention number of pubs) that if Blaenafon is not the biggest tourist centre in Wales before too long, I for one will be very surprised. It certainly deserves to be!
