This is the bridge where the Varteg road from Blaenavon
crosses the old high level railway looking south. The track is gone and it is
now a designated cycle path, but it clearly wouldn't take a lot - maybe some rails
and sleepers - to extend the current line towards Pontypool, Newport, London and
for the first time ever create an unbroken rail link between Blaenavon and Vladivostok!
Well, its a dream. Anyway, the next time you are tempted to pour scorn on cyclists,
remember that if it wasn't for the cycling lobby, this track would probably now
be lost beneath warehouses, factories, golf superstores and worse. |
