You can see how steep this hill is by the angle it makes to the houses on the right, and I can remember scrambling up over ice and snow to the old Labour Exchange (the white building) to collect my dole. The large ochre structure to the left is the Council Offices building, once home to Blaenavon Urban District Council (now part of Torfaen, and run from Pontypool). One of the classic photographs often seen in Blaenafon was that of Queen Elizabeth II during a visit in 1966, on the balcony of this building (actually above the main entrance in Lion Street, on the left) waving regally to the crowds. Chuck has also visited since, and as Blaenavon's fortunes improve, so do the chances of furter VIP visitations. I hope they haven't thrown away the bunting.
