14. Park Street, Blaenafon

park street,blaenavon

Another example of classic 'valleys' housing still serving a useful purpose today. This is the quietest of the three main streets to run down through the town centre, the other two being High Street and Broad Street, the main shopping thoroughfare. When these houses were built they would have been very overcrowded, but modern estates built since the war on Blaenafon's south hillside, combined with the town's dwindling population have solved that problem. The first building of this terrace used to be a pub - there are only a handful left open of the eighty-plus serving in Blaenafon's hey-day. At the top of this row was a militia barracks - the 'wild west' reputation of Blaenavon meant that a more usual police station was considered inadequate to keep the peace.
