13. Workmen's Hall, Blaenavon

workmans hall and institue, blaenafon

Much is made of the fact that Blaenafon Workmen's Hall was built by subscription from the workers themselves, although you may wonder how much choice they had in the matter. Anyway, they certainly got their money's worth because it is not only a most impressive structure as you can see, but for over a hundred years has functioned as an entertainment centre for the town, hosting a cinema, music venue, theatre, bingo hall, library and more. I have fond memories of the cinema - like most theatres it had 'flip-up' seats, but i'd never come across two-seater 'sofa flip-ups' before. They were found in the rear of the stalls, a bit like bus seats but much more comfortable and provided as a service to courting couples. Strangely, I can't remember a single film I saw in that hall.
