12. Terrace on Coity Mountain

coity mountain

This picture, taken from St Peter's churchyard, gives you some idea of the isolation of some of the dwellings near Blaenafon. Just imagine that mountain covered with snow! The Coety is bleak and barren these days, having had its forests removed long ago to provide the charcoal and wood required for the early iron furnaces and forges. Elsewhere at Cwmafon as shown earlier and notably in the next valley near Cwmcarn, efforts have been made over the years to replant the mountains with rapidly growing evergreens, but it can give an alien 'alpine' feel. I personally prefer the moor, although it does allow a bitingly cold wind free rein across the town.
