7. Cwmafon from the Coity, Varteg

This picture shows the terrace of cottages in the last picture, but from a point on the Coety mountain opposite. In front of us is a heather-covered bluff then the valley drops away below.You can see how the cottages nestle into the valley side. Just beneath them is the main road, and in front of that (not visible here) is the Afon Lywd river course in the valley bed. To the right is the site of the old forge and the Blorenge mountain rises behind. Over the trees is the Usk valley and the canal at Llanover is less than three miles away, but it's quite a climb and would have been an insurmountable obstacle in the early 19th century. The slopes have been reforested as the original forests were denuded, probably to make charcoal for the early furnaces.
