The ironworks is where it all started for Blaenafon town, back in 1787. Much of the original site has been restored - you can even go into the houses and see how little space the original occupants had to live in. I can remember this row of cottages as a derelict shell and the ironworks yard full of earth and rubble, but it has all been cleaned up very well. Blaenavon's main Visitor Centre is on site with tourist details and booklets available. The chap who runs it is a fund of knowledge on Blaenafon, and will even sort you out somewhere to stay. Make this your first port of call in the town.
