Santander is a pretty but unremarkable seaside resort and working port. It lacks the sophistication of San Sebastian and to many this adds to its charm - think Nice and Toulon. A big fire in 1941 destroyed a lot of the old town so don't expect many ancient buildings, although the cathedral is impressive - it has a section of glass floor exposing the original Roman building.
