Further along the south bank, we can look over the river to Mercado de La Ribera. This is everything you would expect from Spain's largest covered market - stalls groaning with local produce from the rich countryside around the city. Hams, cheeses, peppers, olive oil, every fish you can name and probably a few you can't. As markets go this would take some beating even in Spain, which is saying something. Next to that is the Inglesia de San Anton, one of Bilbao's oldest churches, standing at the start of the 'seven streets' of original Bilbao. |
