It is my declared intention to show the best tourist pictures of any city but I'm limiting myself to only two of the Guggenheim museum, so this must be the last. Puppy - a flower sculpture by Jeff Koons - was originally intended as a temporary installation, but he won the local's hearts and was adopted as Bilbao's mascot so deserves his place in any tourist guide. It's well known that this 12 metre scotty dog is based on a cheap china gift but has achieved serious artistic status. I'm not the first to note the irony that the descent back to tat hasn't taken long - he is now available on t-shirts and many other souvenirs. When he is sold again as a porcelain figurine this artistic statement will have been vindicated. Scotty dogs have burned their image into some nations psyche deeper than others - most Spaniards think he is a cat. |
