12. Bourgeois' Spider, Guggenheim

Well, we finally arrive at what is most people's image of modern Bilbao - the Guggenheim museum. This titanium and sandstone edifice is certainly remarkable. Built on the site of the city's main shipyards, its design is generally thought to recall that association. But even if you don't care for its shape, you will be fascinated by the reflections - at once silver, gold, platinum, champagne. There can be few buildings that so dominate a town in this way, but then that was the idea. Paid for from the Basque regenerative budget, it is a bold statement from a region growing in confidence and has given a massive fillip to the Basque economy - the 'Guggenheim Effect'. Unfortunately or not, what's inside (or outside , in this case) is irrelevant as the building itself stands as a massive work of art rather than architecture and overwhelms its contents - I would be happier if it were a sports stadium, conference hall or railway station as it would seem much less self-indulgent if it were more functional. The spider is one of a series by Louise Bourgeois shown in several major galleries - as far as I know this one is a permanent installation.
