If you walk along the hillside above the old town, you'll come across this large open space - Echevarria Park. Once the site of a large metal foundry, it has now been cleared for public recreation and once again there are good views over central Bilbao in the valley below. The chimney has been left as a monument to the industry that created much of Bilbao's wealth and very impressive it is too, visible from much of the city. From this viewpoint you can see why the nicknames the locals use for Bilbao is 'botxo' - the pit. They would have used 'the smoke', but London got there first. On my first visit here over twenty years ago, I remember looking down from roughly this area - the whole town was covered in a mustard haze and looked appalling, but to be fair it has cleaned up nicely and is almost unrecognisable from those days. There are many cities in Europe and beyond that have recently exorcised their dark industrial demons, but few have done it as well as Bilbao. |
